Howard Henry Baker Jr. was born in Huntsville, Tennessee, USA. He was an American politician and diplomat who served as a Republican U.S. Senator from Tennessee, Senate Minority Leader, and Senate Majority Leader. He served as President Reagan's Chief of Staff from February 1987 until July of 1988. He served as a United States Ambassador to Japan from 2001 to 2005. He graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1949. He received Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1984 and Order of the Paulownia Flowers in 2008 (Japan). He wrote several books include: No Margin for Error, Howard Baker's Washington, and Scott's Gulf.
