Sir John Joseph Caldwell Abbott was born in Saint-André-d'Argenteuil, Quebec, Canada. He was a Canadian lawyer and Conservative politician who served as the third Prime Minister of Canada from 1891 to 1892. He also served two one-year terms as mayor of Montreal from 1887 to 1889. He was elected to the House of Commons as member for Argenteuil from 1867-1874 and 1880-1887. He earned a BCL (Bachelor of Civil Law) degree in 1847 and a DCL (Doctor of Civil Law) degree in 1867 both from McGill University. Most of his legal practice was in corporate law. He began lecturing in commercial and criminal law at McGill in 1853, and in 1855 he became a professor and dean of its Faculty of Law, continued in this position until 1880.
