David Rockefeller was born in New York City, New York. He is an American banker who served as chairman and chief executive of Chase Manhattan Corporation. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. He graduated from Harvard University in 1936 with a B.S. in English history and literature. He also studied economics for a year at Harvard and then a year at the London School of Economics. In 1940 he received a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. His dissertation was entitled Unused Resources and Economic Waste. Rockefeller initially served as a secretary to New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia. Then, he became assistant regional director of the U.S. Office of Defense, Health and Welfare Services.
