Cecil Blount DeMille was born in Ashfield, Massachusetts. He was an American actor, film director, editor, producer and screenwriter. He began his career as a stage actor in 1900. Cleopatra was his first film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. He went on to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for the first time for his circus drama The Greatest Show on Earth, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. He was also the first recipient of the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award, which is named in his honor
