Dr. John Cunningham Lilly was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA. He was an American physician, neuroscientist and writer. He earned a BS degree from California Institute of Technology in 1938. He earned his MD degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1942. He invented and promoted the use of an isolation tank as a means of sensory deprivation. He also attempted communication between humans and dolphins. He wrote several books include: Man and Dolphin, The Mind of the Dolphin, The Center of the Cyclone, The Deep Self, Simulations of God, The Dyadic Cyclone, The Scientist, Communication between Man and Dolphin, and Tanks for the Memories (with E. J. Gold).
