Howard Kingsbury Smith was born in Ferriday, Louisiana, USA. He was an American journalist, news anchor and film actor. He studied German and journalism at Tulane University, New Orleans. He also studied at Heidelberg University, Germany. He graduated from Merton College, Oxford in 1939. He was one of the last American reporters to leave Berlin before Germany and the United States went to war. His 1942 book, Last Train from Berlin: An Eye-Witness Account of Germany at War describes the reporter's observations from Berlin in the year after the departure of Berlin Diary author William L. Shirer. In 1946, Smith went to London for CBS with the title of chief European correspondent. In late 1961, Smith left his job at CBS and moved to ABC. His role in several films include: The Best Man, Nashville, and The Pursuit of D. B. Cooper. He wrote memoir, Events Leading Up to My Death. He received Sigma Delta Chi Award for radio journalism and Paul White Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association.
