George Armistead Smathers was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. He was an American lawyer and politician. He earned his bachelor's degree and law degree from University of Florida. He served as an Assistant U.S. District Attorney from 1940 to 1942. He was elected to serve two terms in the United States House of Representatives, representing Florida's Fourth Congressional District from 1947 to 1951. He represented the state of Florida in the United States Senate for eighteen years, from 1951 until 1969, as a member of the Democratic Party. In 1991 he became the largest single benefactor in the history of the University of Florida. On May 1, 1991, the University of Florida Libraries were named the "George A. Smathers Libraries" in his honor.
