John Llewellyn Lewis was born in Cleveland, Lucas County, Iowa, USA. He was an American labor leader who served as president of the United Mine Workers of America from 1920 to 1960. He was the driving force behind the founding of the Congress of Industrial Organizations. In 1907, he ran for mayor of Lucas and launched a feed-and-grain distributorship. He was appointed a member of the Labor Advisory Board and the National Labor Board of the National Recovery Administration in 1933 and used it to raise wages of miners and reduce competition.
