Cynthia "Cindy" Morris Sherman was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. She is an American photographer. As an artist she was known for her photography of herself in portraits in various scenarios that stereotype certain types of woman. She studied at Buffalo State College and earned her Bachelor’s degree from State University of New York in 1972-1976. In 1995, she was the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship. To create her photographs, Sherman shoots alone in her studio, assuming multiple roles as author, director, make-up artist, hairstylist, wardrobe mistress, and model. She transforms herself into characters and sets up settings from popular culture such as: television soap operas, old movies and pulp magazines.
