Sir James Young Simpson was born in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland. He was a Scottish physician and a significant figure in the history of medicine. He was first to demonstrate the anaesthetic properties of chloroform on humans and helped to popularise the drug for use in medicine. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1832. In 1840, when only 28, he was appointed Professor of Midwifery(obstetrics and gynaecology), and rapidly consolidated its position as a popular and essential part of medical education.
