John Davis Long was born in Buckfield, Maine, USA. He was an American Republican politician and lawyer. He was educated as a lawyer at Harvard Law School. He served as the 32nd Governor of Massachusetts from 1880-1883. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts's 2nd congressional district from 1883-1889. He served as the United States Secretary of the Navy from 1897-1902. He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He wrote several books include: Bites of a cherry, Removal of the Ponca Indians (with Carl Schurz), and The new American Navy.
