James Loeb was born in New York City, New York, USA. He was an American banker and philanthropist. He was the son of Solomon and Betty Loeb. Solomon was a partner and founder of the banking firm of Kuhn Loeb & Company. Entering Harvard College in 1884, he concentrated in Greek and Latin. He studied economic history, national economics and international commercial law. Instead, he acceded to his father’s wish, entering Kuhn Loeb & Company in 1888 and becoming a partner in January 1894. His philanthropy in the classics and the arts began before this retirement and continued throughout his lifetime. He also supported the German Research Institution for Psychiatry that was founded in 1917 – today's Max-Planck Institute – and donated his important collection of antique gold jewelry to the State Collections of Antiques in Munich. On March 13, 1925, he received an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Cambridge.
