Ethan Allen Hitchcock was born in Vergennes, Vermont, USA. He was an American army officer who had War Department assignments in Washington, D.C., during the American Civil War, in which he served as a major general. He served in the Seminole War in Florida and as the right-hand man of Gen. Winfield Scott during the Mexican-American War. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1817.
