John James Audubon was born in Les Cayes, Haiti. He was an American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter known for his studies, drawings and paintings of North American birds. His major work, a color-plate book entitled The Birds of America, is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. He identified 25 new species. He was notable for his extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats. He wrote other books include: American Ornithological Biography, and The Quadrupeds of America (with John Bachman).
