John Lancaster Spalding was born in Lebanon, Kentucky, USA. He was an American author, poet, the first bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Peoria, and a co-founder of The Catholic University of America. He wrote poetry under the pseudonym Henry Hamilton. He wrote several books include: Education and the Higher Life, The Poet's Praise (poetry), Aphorisms and Reflections, and Socialism and Labor.
