John Walter Olver was born in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, USA. He is an American Democratic politician. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts's 1st congressional district from 1991 to 2013. He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1969-1973. He was a member of the Massachusetts State Senate from 1973-1991. He earned a BS degree in Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1954. He earned an MS degree in Chemistry from Tufts University in 1956. He received his PhD in Chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1961. He served as professor of Chemistry at the University of Massachusetts Amherst from 1961-1969.
