Emanuel Ax was born in Lviv, Ukraine. He is a Grammy-winning American classical pianist. He is an internationally acclaimed performer, and a teacher on the faculty of the Juilliard School. In 1970 he received his B.A. in French at Columbia University. In 1973 he won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. In 1979 he was awarded the coveted Avery Fisher Prize, which led to a recording contract with RCA Victor. He has been an exclusive Sony Classical recording artist since 1987. He has received Grammy awards for the second and third volumes of his cycle of Haydn's piano sonatas.
