John Joseph Sweeney was born in The Bronx, New York City, New York, USA. He is an American labor leader. He graduated with a degree in economics from Iona College in New Rochelle in 1956. He served as president of the AFL-CIO from 1995 to 2009. He worked as a grave-digger and building porter to pay his tuition, and joined his first union at this time. In 1976, he was elected president of Local 32B. He resigned his position as contract director. In 1977, he merged Local 32B with Local 32J to form Local 32BJ. In 1980, he was elected president of the national SEIU. He continued to serve as president of Local 32BJ until mid-1981. He has written several books include: Solutions for the New Work Force (with Karen Nussbaum), America Needs a Raise (with David Kusnet), Innovation at the Speed of Laughter, Return to Civility, and Looking Back, Moving Forward.
