Edward Bond was born in Holloway, North London. He is an English playwright, theatre director, poet, and screenwriter. He is the author of some fifty plays, among them Saved, the production of which was instrumental in the abolition of theatre censorship in the UK. He wrote The Pope's Wedding, a portrait of a frustrated, inarticulate, and finally murderous country labourer; it was given a Sunday-night performance at the Royal Court Theatre in 1962. Lear and the woman retrieves texts of Shakespeare and Greek tragedy, while in restoration used the dramatic form of the 18th-century comedy to criticize contemporary society.
