George Mikes was born in Siklos, Hungary. He was a Hungarian-born British author and journalist, best known for his humorous commentaries on various countries. He graduated in Budapest in 1933 and started work as a journalist on Reggel, a Budapest newspaper. In 1938 he became the London correspondent for Reggel and 8 Órai Ujság. He worked for Reggel until 1940. From 1975 until his death he worked for the Hungarian section of Szabad Európa Rádió. He was president of the London branch of PEN, and a member of the Garrick Club. He wrote several books include: How to be an Alien, How to scrape skies, East is East, How to be inimitable, Switzerland for Beginners, The Land of the Rising Yen, How To Be Decadent, Tsi-Tsa, English humour for beginners, How to be a Guru, and How to be God.
