Jane Margaret Byrne was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. She was an American politician who served as the 40th Mayor of Chicago from 1979-1983. She won the Chicago mayoral election on April 3, 1979, becoming the first and, to date, only female mayor of Chicago; the second largest city in the United States at the time. She earned a BS degree in Chemistry and Biology from Barat College, Lake Forest, Illinois in 1955. She is author of the book, entitled My Chicago.
