John Hume was born in Derry, Northern Ireland. He is an Irish politician. He was a founding member of the Social Democratic and Labour Party. He was co-recipient of the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize, with David Trimble. He was the second leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party, a position he held from 1979 until 2001. He has served as a Member of the European Parliament and a Member of the UK Parliament. He is also a recipient of the Gandhi Peace Prize and the Martin Luther King Award. He earned a BA degree in French and History from National University of Ireland in 1958. He earned an MA degree from St. Patrick's College, Maynooth in 1964. He has written several books include: Personal Views: Politics, Peace and Reconciliation in Ireland, A new Ireland, and Derry Beyond the Walls.
