Harvey Bernard Milk was born in Woodmere, New York, USA. He was an American politician who became the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California, when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He attended New York State College for Teachers in Albany from 1947 to 1951, majoring in mathematics. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.
