Charles Evans Hughes was born in Glens Falls, New York. He was an American Republican politician and judge. He served as the 36th Governor of New York and the 11th Chief Justice of the United States. He was the Republican nominee in the 1916 U.S. Presidential election, losing narrowly to incumbent President Woodrow Wilson. He read law and entered Columbia Law School in 1882, where he graduated in 1884 with highest honors. While studying law, he taught at Delaware Academy. He was also a special lecturer for New York University Law School, 1893–1900.
