John Paul Stevens was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He is an American jurist who served as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1975 until his retirement in 2010 (Nominated by President Gerald Ford). He earned a BA degree in English from the University of Chicago in 1941. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was awarded a Bronze Star. He graduated from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law in 1947. After clerking for Justice Wiley Blount Rutledge, he co-founded a law firm in Chicago, focusing on antitrust law. He served as lecturer of Antitrust Law at Northwestern University School of Law from 1950-1954 and professor at the University of Chicago Law School from 1955-1958. In 1970, President Richard Nixon appointed Stevens to the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He has written several books include: Five Chiefs: A Supreme Court Memoir and Six Amendments: How and Why We Should Change the Constitution.
