John William Money was born in Morrinsville, New Zealand. He was a New Zealander-born American psychologist, sexologist and author, specializing in research into sexual identity and biology of gender. He was one of the first scientists to study the psychology of sexual fluidity and how the societal constructs of "gender" affect an individual. He studied psychology at Victoria University of Wellington, graduating with a double master's degree in psychology and education in 1944. He received his PhD from Harvard University in 1952. He proposed and developed several theories and related terminology, including gender identity, gender role, and lovemap. He was a professor of pediatrics and medical psychology at Johns Hopkins University from 1951 until his death. He received the Magnus Hirschfeld Medal in 2002 from the German Society for Social-Scientific Sexuality Research. He wrote several books include: Sexual Signatures on Being a Man or a Woman (with Patricia Tucker), Lovemaps, Gay, Straight, and In-Between, Sex Errors of the Body and Related Syndromes, Gendermaps, and Principles of Developmental Sexology.
