Dimitri Mitropoulos was born in Athens. He was a Greek conductor, pianist, and composer. He received international fame both as a major conductor and composer of the 20th century. He studied music at the Athens Conservatoire as well as in Brussels and Berlin, with Ferruccio Busoni among his teachers. An excellent pianist, Mitropoulos sometimes conducted from the keyboard. He did not use a baton, and even in rehearsal he conducted from memory. He was one of the earliest conductors to perform twelve-tone works of Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, and others.
