George Crook was born in Taylorsville, Ohio, USA. He was an American soldier, most noted for his distinguished service during the American Civil War and the Indian Wars. During the 1880s, the Apache nicknamed Crook Nantan Lupan, which means "Grey Wolf." He was assigned to the 4th U.S. infantry as brevet second lieutenant, serving in California from 1852–61. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1856, and to captain in 1860. He was ordered east and in 1861, with the beginning of the American Civil War, was made colonel of the 36th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
