James Edward Allchin was born in Grand Rapids, Kent county, Michigan, USA. He is an American blues rock guitarist and a former Microsoft executive. He earned a BS degree in Computer Science from the University of Florida in 1973. He earned an MS degree in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1980. He received his PhD in Computer Science from Georgia Institute of Technology. He assisted Microsoft in creating many of the system platform components including Microsoft Windows, Windows Server, server products such as SQL Server, and developer technologies. He is best known for building Microsoft's server business. He is also known for his leading role in the architecture and development of the directory services technology Banyan VINES. After serving sixteen years at Microsoft, he retired in early 2007. He is now a professional musician. His albums list shown below: Overclocked, Q.E.D., and Decisions.
