Constance Mayfield Rourke was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He was an American educator, historian and writer. She taught at Vassar from 1910 to 1915. She wrote numerous pieces of criticism for magazines like The Nation and The New Republic. In 1915 she resigned, thereafter working as a research historian and free-lance writer devoted to defining the historical aspects of the American character through the interpretation of popular culture. She is best known for American Humor: A Study of the National Character.
