Jerome Seymour Bruner was born in New York City, New York, USA. He was an American psychologist. He earned a BA degree in psychology from Duke University in 1937, an MA degree in psychology in 1939, and received his PhD in psychology from Harvard University in 1941. In 1945, he served as a psychology professor at Harvard and was heavily involved in research relating to cognitive psychology and educational psychology. In 1970, he left Harvard to teach at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. He was a senior research fellow at the New York University School of Law. He was awarded honorary doctorates from Yale University, Columbia University, and the Sorbonne. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He wrote several books include: A study of thinking, The Process of Education, On knowing, Processes of cognitive growth, The relevance of education, Beyond the Information Given, Acts of meaning, The culture of education, and Minding the Law (with Anthony G. Amsterdam).
