David Joel Horowitz was born in Forest Hills, Queens, New York. He is an American conservative writer, activist and editor. He is a founder and current president of the think tank the David Horowitz Freedom Center; editor of FrontPage Magazine. He founded the organization Students for Academic Freedom, purportedly to oppose political correctness and leftist orientation in academia. He has worked as a columnist for Salon magazine. He has recounted his ideological journey in a series of retrospective books, culminating with his 1996 memoir Radical Son: A Generational Odyssey. He received a BA from Columbia University in 1959 and a master's degree in English literature at University of California, Berkeley. He also wrote The Free World Colossus: A Critique of American Foreign Policy in the Cold War.
