Edward Hopper was born in Upper Nyack, New York. He was an American painter. While he was most popularly known for his oil paintings, he was equally proficient as a watercolorist and printmaker in etching. His famous works include House by the Railroad, Automat and the iconic Nighthawks. In 1895, he created his first signed oil painting, Rowboat in Rocky Cove. In 1913, at the famous Armory Show, Hopper sold his first painting, Sailing, which he painted over an earlier self-portrait.
