John Jay Hooker Jr. was born in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. He was an American lawyer, businessman and politician who was the Democratic nominee for Governor of Tennessee in 1970 and 1998. He studied at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt University Law School. He was admitted to the Tennessee bar in 1957, and then practiced law with his father. In 1960, he left his father's law firm to start a new law firm. He served as chairman of STP Corporation from 1973 to 1976.
