Heinrich Schliemann was born in Neubukow, Germany. He was a German archaeologist. He was an advocate of the historicity of places mentioned in the works of Homer. He was an archaeological excavator of Hissarlik, now presumed to be the site of Troy, along with the Mycenaean sites Mycenae and Tiryns. In 1869, he was awarded a PhD in absentia from the university of Rostock for that submission. He began work on Troy in 1871. His excavations began before archaeology had developed as a professional field. He wrote several books include: Ithaka der Peloponnes und Troja, Troy & Its Remains, Mycenae, Ilios, the city and country of the Trojans, Tiryns, and Troja.
