Eric John Ernest Hobsbawm was born in Alexandria, Egypt. He was a British Marxist historian of the rise of industrial capitalism, socialism, and nationalism. He obtained his Ph.D. in history at the University of Cambridge before serving in the Second World War. He was President of Birkbeck, University of London from 2002 until his death. In 1970, he was appointed professor and in 1978 he became a Fellow of the British Academy. In 2003 he received the Balzan Prize. He wrote several books include: The Age of Extremes, The Age of Revolution, The Age of Empire, The Age of Capital, On History, Uncommon People, and Bandits.
