Alger Hiss was an American lawyer, government official, author, and lecturer. He was involved in the establishment of the United Nations both as a U.S. State Department and U.N. official. Hiss was accused of being a Soviet spy in 1948 and convicted of perjury in connection with this charge in 1950. Hiss was secretary-general of the San Francisco United Nations Conference on International Organization, which began on April 25, 1945, and then became the full director of the OSPA. In 1946, he left government service to become president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where he served until May 5, 1949, when he was forced to step down. In 1988 Hiss wrote an autobiography, Recollections of a Life. He maintained his innocence and fought his perjury conviction until his death at age 92, when he died of emphysema on November 15, 1996, at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. His friends and family continue to insist on his innocence.
