Elsa Maxwell was born in Keokuk, Iowa, USA. She was an American gossip columnist, author, songwriter, and professional hostess renowned for her parties for royalty and high society figures of her day. She appeared as herself in the films Stage Door Canteen and Rhapsody in Blue, as well as co-starring in the film Hotel for Women, for which she wrote the screenplay and a song. In 1936 her I Live by My Wits was published serially in Harper’s Bazaar. Her radio program, Elsa Maxwell’s Party Line, began in 1942. In 1957 she published How to Do It: The Lively Art of Entertaining and began making weekly television appearances on Jack Paar’s Tonight show.
