Helen Frankenthaler was born in Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA. She was an American abstract expressionist painter. She was a major contributor to the history of postwar American painting. She began exhibiting her large-scale abstract expressionist paintings in contemporary museums and galleries in the early 1950s. She studied at the Dalton School under muralist Rufino Tamayo and also at Bennington College in Vermont. In 2001, she was awarded the National Medal of Arts.
