Fawn McKay Brodie was born in Ogden, Utah, USA. She was a biographer and one of the first female professors of history at the University of California, Los Angeles, who is best known for Thomas Jefferson: An Intimate History, a work of psychobiography, and No Man Knows My History, an early and still influential non-hagiographic biography of Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement. She completed her B.A. in English literature at the University of Utah in 1934. She earned an M.A. degree from the University of Chicago in 1936.
