A mathematical theory is not to be considered complete until you have made it so clear that you can explain it to the first man whom you meet on the street.

David Hilbert was born in Königsberg or Wehlau, Province of Prussia. He was a German mathematician. He discovered and developed a broad range of fundamental ideas in many areas, including invariant theory and the axiomatization of geometry. He also formulated the theory of Hilbert spaces, one of the foundations of functional analysis. He is known as one of the founders of proof theory and mathematical logic, as well as for being among the first to distinguish between mathematics and metamathematics. He obtained his doctorate in 1885. He obtained the position of Professor of Mathematics at the University of Göttingen, at that time the best research center for mathematics in the world.
