Andre Braugher was born in Chicago, Illinois. He is an American actor. He is best known for his roles as Cassiel in City of Angels, Thomas Searles in the film Glory, Detective Frank Pembleton on Homicide: Life on the Street from 1993 to 1998 and again in the 2000 made-for-TV film, Owen Thoreau Jr. on the TNT show Men of a Certain Age, and his Emmy nominated performance as Captain Ray Holt on the Golden Globe-winning best comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He attended St. Ignatius College Prep and later graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. in theater in 1984. He then attended the Juilliard School's Drama Division, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1988. He was acknowledged as the Most Outstanding Theater Student at graduation. He received Television Critics Association awards for individual achievement in drama in 1997 and 1998. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for best actor in a drama series in 1996 and 1998, winning in the latter year. In 1997 he was selected by People as one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World".
