Dr. John Robert Hewson was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He is a former Australian politician, economist and businessman. He was a member of the Australian Parliament for Wentworth from 1987-1995. He served as leader of the Liberal Party and leader of the Opposition from 1990 to 1994. He graduated in Economics from the University of Sydney. He earned a master's degree from the University of Regina, Canada. He received his second master's and a PhD in Economics from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Before entering politics, he worked for periods as an economist for the Reserve Bank of Australia and as a director of the Macquarie Bank. He served as Professor of Management at Macquarie University, Sydney, and Dean of the Macquarie Graduate School of Management in 2002. In 2005, he was elected onto the Touring Car Entrants Group of Australia board as an independent member. In 2012, he was appointed as a non-executive director of Larus Energy (oil and gas company) developing operations in Papua New Guinea. In 2000, he was honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia.
