John David Podesta Jr. was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He is an American political consultant and lawyer. He served as White House Chief of Staff to President Bill Clinton from 1998 until 2001 and as Counselor to President Barack Obama from January 1, 2014 until February 13, 2015. He also served as White House Staff Secretary from 1993-1995. He graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois in 1971. He received his JD degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1976. He worked as a trial attorney for the Department of Justice's Honors Program in the Land and Natural Resources Division, and as a Special Assistant to the Director of ACTION, the Federal volunteer agency. After the 2016 election, he joined The Washington Post as a columnist.
