Henri Pirenne was born in Verviers, Liège, Belgium. He was a Belgian historian. A medievalist of Walloon descent, he wrote a multivolume history of Belgium in French and became a national hero. He also became prominent in the nonviolent resistance to the Germans who occupied Belgium in World War I. He studied at the University of Liège. He became Professor of History at the University of Ghent from 1886-1930. He wrote several books include: Histoire de Belgique, Mohammed and Charlemagne, Medieval cities, A History Of Europe, Economic and social history of medieval Europe, The stages in the social history of capitalism, Belgium and the First World War, Early democracies in the Low Countries, and A History of Europe from the Invasions to the XVI Century.
