Jesse Alexander Helms Jr. was born in Monroe, North Carolina, USA. He was an American politician, journalist and a leader in the conservative movement. He was elected five times as a Republican to the United States Senate from North Carolina (1973-2003). He served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 1995 to 2001 he had a major voice in foreign policy. He studied at Wingate Junior College and Wake Forest College. He begin a career as a journalist, working for the next eleven years as a newspaper and radio reporter, first as a sportswriter and news reporter for Raleigh's The News & Observer, and also as assistant city editor for The Raleigh Times. He wrote several books include: When free men shall stand, The Ramparts We Watched, Empire for liberty, and Here's where I stand (memoir). He married Dorothy "Dot" Coble in 1942.
