John Florio, known in Italian as Giovanni Florio was born in London, England. He was an English linguist and translator, a royal language tutor at the Court of James I, and a possible friend and influence on William Shakespeare. He was also the first translator of Montaigne into English. In 1580 he translated, as Navigations and Discoveries, Giovanni Battista Ramusio’s account of the voyages of Jacques Cartier. He was admitted a member of Magdalen College, Oxford and became a tutor of French and Italian at the University. He wrote several books include: First Fruits, Second Fruits, and A Worlde of Wordes.
