Jerzy Kosinski was born in Łódź, Poland. He was an award-winning Polish-born American novelist and two-time President of the American Chapter of P.E.N. He earned two graduate degrees in history and sociology at the University of Łódź. He served as a professor of Sociology at Polish Academy of Sciences from 1955-57. He also received grants from the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1967 and the Ford Foundation in 1968. In 1970, he won the American Academy of Arts and Letters award for literature. He wrote several novels include: The Painted Bird, Steps (Winner of the National Book Award for Fiction), Being There, The devil tree, Cockpit, Pinball, and The hermit of 69th Street. He wrote a film, entitled Being There.
