Ivan Petrovich Pavlov was born in Ryazan, Russia. He was a Russian physiologist known primarily for his work in classical conditioning. In 1870, he enrolled in the physics and mathematics department at the University of Saint Petersburg in order to study natural science. He won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1904, becoming the first Russian Nobel laureate. Pavlov's principles of classical conditioning have been found to operate across a variety of experimental and clinical settings, including educational classrooms. He earned a BS degree in Natural Sciences from the University of St. Petersburg in 1875. He received his MD degree from Imperial Medical Academy, St. Petersburg in 1879. He served as a professor of Physiology, Imperial Medical Academy, St. Petersburg from 1890-1924, professor of Pharmacology, Military Medical Academy from 1890-1895, and professor of Physiology, Military Medical Academy from 1895-1925. He was awarded the Royal Society's Copley Medal in 1914.
