He was an American screenwriter and film producer who frequently collaborated with his wife Harriet Frank, Jr. He wrote several films include: Living in a Big Way, Vengeance Valley, The Lone Hand, Ten Wanted Men, Run for Cover, The Long, Hot Summer, The Sound and the Fury, Home from the Hill, Hud, Hombre, The Reivers, The Cowboys, The Spikes Gang, Norma Rae, Murphy's Romance, and Stanley & Iris. He produced several films include: Hud, Hombre, and The Reivers. He nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. He won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Screenplay and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Hud.
